For many, family means a sense of safety and comfort. Something you can always use when living with a chronic illness. And a meeting with your family can actually have a positive impact on your symptoms. On the one hand, there is the feeling of safety and belonging. The psychological effects of your endometriosis, in particular, respond directly to this. You can sit back and relax. You are not alone here. On the other hand, there is of course the tried-and-true tool of distraction. Whether it is a large family celebration or just a small chat with your closest circle – either can be an excellent distraction from your pain and other symptoms. These effects are often lasting, and you may be able to draw on the benefits of a single get-together for several days.
However, family does not mean the same thing to everyone, and you should always listen to yourself about which constellation feels supportive to you right now and which does not. Your chosen family, consisting for example of close friends, can mean just as much love and warmth as your family of origin. If you have perhaps withdrawn for a while, it is always helpful to be clear in advance about the scope. This could, for example, mean arranging a time-limited meet-up or meeting with only a small number of people. That way you do not overwhelm yourself and do not put additional stress on your body. If you are truly a family person, then by all means dive into the hustle and bustle at the next family gathering!
